I may, after my tutor feedback, add this picture of the ants.  It was one of my shortlist as you can see below and I like the picture.  If I make a replacement it will be for the EGGS, I still like this shot but was less pleased with the picture when printed it seemed a little flat.  I shall give it some thought.

Assignment 4 - Design a Book Cover

Here is my final book cover which I have designed.

The imaginary book is about a man who has moved to the country, and is trying to covert his old life to the new country life, it is like cycling in snow...

This is a new book cover, saved in 300 ppi, as the one above was too small, done in error.

This piece is called 'Knife Edge', the bench gives a sense of scale.  And below is a different view of the same sculpture and I have caught two visitors through the gap.

I initially liked this picture because its slightly unusual, but it was for that reason also that I held back a bit.


This is called 'Hill Arches' and it is a very smooth sculpture and actually a lovely green colour, you can just see the different shadings.

Work on the grounds continue to keep it looking in top condition.  It seemed strange to me that the sculptures were just dotted around, you need to look twice to see this one. 'Figure in a Shelter'.

This is still called a Figure in a Shelter, this sculpture has lovely shapes and is beautifully smooth, surrounded by differing vegetation.




This is one of my favourites, just because of the way the light catches it.  It is called 'Mother & Child'. Its beautiful and very tactile.  The highlights are lovely.

I love this hill top sculpture.  The sky is just interesting enough although ideally for this I would have like the sky to have been blue - and stunning.  Also ideally I would have liked a sheep in the foreground looking toward the camera.    Large Reclining Figure.

I love the way the sheep are in with the sculptures, here they are all nestled under the 'Sheep Piece'
and here I am grateful for the sheep in the foreground.

Although I liked the dominance of the sheep in the first picture I can see now that you don't know which one to look at first.  This one here is better composition still showing the sculpture and sheep together but all sits a bit more comfortably.






The gardens are very interesting and you find sculpture hidden everywhere, here through the gate you can see 'Upright Motive'..

Assignment 2 : Seeing like your camera

ASSIGNMENT 2 - SEEING LIKE YOUR CAMERA 

Note to tutor : I have read all on image numbering and have not ignored your advice but just haven't yet put into practice. But will do very shortly ....

This assignment is designed to help you resolve high contrast scenes and produce photos that do not need post processing, or as near as possible.  All of the below photographs are straight from the camera with no processing.  I have a couple of choices from the main photographs taken and then have selected the one that I prefer of looks the most like the situation, the image how I saw it, and these are my final selection of 15 which I have placed in Dropbox, above.

By taking lots of photographs and testing different situations it has really opened my eyes to the different things you camera can do.. sometimes producing a picture nothing like you are looking at.
My example of this was a particularly pretty sunset,  the sun was large and sky soft pink.  I had a variation of one that look fairly like what I was looking at.. another the sun was pictured a lot darker and a small harsh spot of light.  Another the sky was completely washed out with none of the lovely colours.  Another had a reflection on the lens... and it went on an array of problems.  I shall continue to practice this as I found it frustrating not to master it.  Maybe the sun was too high and strong when I tried.  But I can say I was shocked at the variations.

My first selection is - Indoor space in which the only available light is strong natural window light - As with most of my shots I bracketed the image ( 7098 ), so as to have a choice of shots and also to show myself what the differences are between the exposures, as a learning tool.  Directing the camera at the light source you have to be aware of catching the lens, which you don't always see until afterwards.  This shot is well exposed with a little clipping, but it showed the outside clearly, the sun showed on the cushions and not too much detail was lost on the cushions.  The lesser exposed shot defined the trees more but then the cushions were too dark.

The Second image ( 7106 )  again here it was a matter of getting the exposure correct so that the detail was in the curtains, and floor wasn't too over exposed, and still managing to get details from the garden.  This could have been slightly darker but then you would start to lose detail in the curtains.

This third image was a very good representation of what I was seeing, the one lighter overexposed outside and the one darker lost detail in the bike. So I was happy with this one, maybe a little over exposed in the window.

INDOOR SPACE - NATURAL LIGHT

ANY BACKLIT SCENE

Here we have three backlit scenes.  The thing to do here was to try and expose the foreground and background, keeping as much information in both.  I have chosen the slightly lighter choice Img 6994. but still a little undecided as the darker image is probably how I saw it in situ.  I shall stay with this choice.  Everything is well exposed and all round detail is good.  This was in dappley sunshine.
My second choice IMG 7042, this one I found a little more difficult as the shot brighter than this really over exposed the sky leaving no information at all this is the best shot I could get - hoping that you can still see some of the tree bark detail.
Lastly image 7047.  This also was a close call between over exposing the sky and being able to read the sign on the gate.  I have gone for the one where the sign is a little less visible, hence less exposed sky.

SUNNY DAY WITH LONG DEEP SHADOWS 

I have chosen these images, not exactly tall buildings, but a sunny day with deep shadows so hopefully this will suffice, giving the same results. The first image ( 6978 ) was very sunny but shadowed by the trees.  I have chosen the slightly brighter shot which gives a better picture.  However the darker image defines the leaves well and is probably how my eye saw it on the day.
The second image again the cottages and shaded on a sunny day.  The shot was easier facing away from the sun as I did get a little flare on the lens on other shots.  This I also bracketed and chose the best shot.
The last shot is still showing a reflection in the glass and a slight shadow of the hanging basket even though it was in shadow.

A SCENE WITH STRONG INCIDENT OF DAPPLED LIGHT

The trees here are giving the dappled light on a sunny day.  I was satisfied with this image ( 7076 ) giving a look how I saw the image. You will see this image is flatter in Part 2.

Image two, ( 7028 ) of the brickwork - the stones looking pretty with the sun shining on them, highlighting the edges. giving a good representation.

And finally, image ( 7070 ),  is the slightly lighter image - the sun was bright casting shadows and you will see the difference in Image ( 7038 ) below.

PART 2 

Part two was taken on a cloudy day, to be a contrast to the sunny dappled light of above.  These shots do not have the shadows cast over them possibly improving some of the pictures to look at.  However I like the dappled sun shots because that is when I think the church is at its prettiest - in real life !!

SUMMARY

I found this section of the course quite challenging and needed to go over things, as some didn't always make sense.  I do feel I have learnt a lot but still need to practice to master these elements, combined with more reading.
I do now understand, but need to experiment so that these processes become easier to put into practice. It would be nice to be able to do them without thinking about it.  As time goes along and I learn more things do slot into place, but it is repetitive use that helps keep it fixed in the brain.  So I shall experiment more.
I have a sense of relief that this section is over .. move on and learn more - hopefully ...
